Composer, Producer, Music Supervision

Having worked on film projects for over two decades now, Charles Newman started his foray into film music with one of his first major song placements in the cult classic film Empire Records when his band PLEASE worked with Talking Head / producer Jerry Harrison and mixer Tom Lord-Alge on their song "Here it Comes Again” landing them in the film and on the platinum selling A&M Records soundtrack.  From there he went on to supply music as a composer, producer and work as a music editor on an array of projects.

Newman has scored several award winning documentaries and music supervised projects that include the Orion Pictures film "All These Small Moments" starring Molly Ringwald, Jemima Kirke and Brian d'Arcy James as well the feature film "Monday" for Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel Without a Crew Project" and TV series.

The 2020 documentary film he scored, “Denise Ho Becoming The Song” came out to a New York Times critics pick, and he recently the Y2K inspired feature film “Millennium Bugs” was released on VOD and streaming platforms, in which he acted as music supervisor and composer, creating the score from unreleased tracks from the 90s dug up off DAT tapes from his former band PLEASE’s archives.

Other recent projects include scoring the short thriller “Blood Positive” with long time collaborator Jon DeRosa (aka Aarktica) which premiered on the Bloody Disgusting network in 2022. as well music supervising and working with Andy Rourke (RIP) of The Smith’s on the score for the indie short “The Wrong Guy”.

Currently the Universal Pictures film “The List” is gearing up for a late summer premiere in which he acted as music supervisor and music producer, creating custom songs with various artists for the film. Also this premiering at at the Dance With Films festival in Los Angeles in June 2023 is the indie short “Chicken” which features actor Matt Walsh (Flaming Hot, Veep) and Vegas sensation Criss Angel. Charles scored the film as well as worked on some custom songs with artists including singer -songwriter Maxie Mandel and pop punkers The Dollyrots.
